“When I was about 5 my family was on vacation in Florida. My dad decided to bring just me to a big park/playground that was pretty far from where we were staying. It was only me and although I was a very outgoing kid, I was not one to just go up to any kids and ask to play with them. I vividly, VIVIDLY remember arriving at the playground. It was one of those super cool ones with all sorts of contraptions and things to climb on. There was a few kids running around and I could tell they were playing a game so I immediately expected and prepared myself just to keep to myself and play alone. My dad walked away to sit on the bench and told me to go on the playground. As I was walking over I looked up and this little boy came out of the playground and run all the way up to me and grabbed my hand and said “hi I’m Zach! Would you like to play with us??” And before I could even answer he pulled into the playground and started explaining the run from the monster (ie. his dad) game that they were playing and had me join right in. A little while passed and a few of the other kids left ( who I learned he also hadn’t known prior to playing with them) and it was only him and I now and our dads. We decided to run to the other side of the park where there was a big open field and a concert stage and play together. It was an incredible day and I never ever forgot him. I was so sad to leave because it felt like he was my best friend in the world just for those few hours. When I got in the car my dad started to explain to me “hey did you notice how the little boy you were playing with was black and his dad was white?” I responded yes I had noticed but didn’t think much of it. My dad had learned from talking to his dad that the little boy was a (I’m not totally sure on the staus of the boy at the time😬) was or/ currently was a foster kid who had been born in prison in a jail cell. His mom was unable to take care of him and he was put into the care/ adopted by the man. I absolutely never forgot it and it has always stayed with me and is my constant reminder to include everyone and never judge anyone and that kindness should be your first response.”
