“I was going through a despondent period in my life(depression). I had gotten out of work and I was at a bus stop. A bus came up to the curb, and I was zoned out kind of, and a veteran in a wheel chair was using the lift to get inside the bus. He looked over his shoulder and made eye contact with me and said, “you’re so beautiful.” He had a veteran hat on, which is how I knew was a vet. I didn’t reply, I halfheartedly smiled. He brought me out of the dismal cave in that moment; letting me know while lost in my depths, that he saw me, and told me something I wasn’t told much. I will never forget him. It wasn’t the compliment, but that he reached through the gloom snd engaged me; for that short period, light shined. If there is anyone that will recognize pain in another, it’s going to be a veteran. They see devastation on levels we can only imagine. He reached through my story, that he didn’t even know and by taking notice, he made me take notice. For a stranger to compliment another stranger, they have a full heart, and this man was a veteran, whom I have great respect for, that couldn’t use his legs anymore, rose above his situation and touched mine.
