The best thing in a long time
One of the most memorable strangers I met was a middle aged man named Theodore. I stopped at a gas station in Los Angeles on my way home from work. Theodore came up and asked if he could wash my windows. I told him I didn’t have any cash, but he said no worries and washed my windows anyway. I ended up locking myself out of my car and he kept me company while I waited for a locksmith. He was just spreading joy and kindness to everyone that came through that gas station. He told me about his homelessness and washing windows everyday to save up for a motel room that he was able to afford every couple of days or so. He had a daughter in college back east that he spoke to regularly but saw rarely. He met with a social worker regularly too. He was in recovery and wanted to become a mentor to people that had similar experiences as him. He had the best attitude and demeanor and was a pleasure to spend time with. He strongly impacted me because I don’t think I would be so cool if I were in his position. I always checked that gas station to see if he was there again but I never caught him. Another time I was in Sacramento for a work conference. I caught an Uber to go get some dinner. My driver was a middle aged woman named Wingy (win-jee). She told me I didn’t want to be alone at night in the part of town I was intending to eat at. I asked her if she knew any good ramen places and she said she was also thinking about getting ramen for dinner so I asked her if she’d like to join me and she agreed. We had a delicious meal together while she told me about her grown kids and what they are doing. She took off her purple wig to show me the very small amount of hair on her head. She told me about the cancer she’s been fighting and how she KNEW she wasn’t going to die as she showed off her right bicep with a fierce expression on her face. She showed me a series of photos of her origami art displays. She gets contracted to do enormous displays of thousands of tiny pieces of folded paper that hang from the ceiling at grand hotels and wedding venues and shopping malls. She too had a great attitude and demeanor and was pleasure to spend time with.
