Don’t bother
Listened to quite a few episodes, there isn’t much out there for hip hop fans who listen to podcasts. Romesh has bad taste in hip hop. He doesn’t understand or appreciate anything less than 10-15 years old, and is patchy (at best) on anything older. He’s also a proponent of the drivel known as uk hip hop, which sounded stale and derivative over a decade ago, and sounds totally obsolete and fossilised now. The same question is still being asked of it - ‘why is it ignored by the mainstream?’, and it gets posed here too. The answer should be even more obvious now than it was when it was discussed in the year 2000. Rupert is an ok presence on the podcast and the dynamic with romesh makes it listenable. Unfortunately he’s recently been replaced by an insufferable posh boy tv producer, who is totally charmless, extremely unfunny, and completely full of himself. He knows nothing about hip hop, and slips into a pathetic mockney accent when talking to uk hip hop artists... embarrassing. Get rid of him. Think this is running out of road, and will end fairly soon as romesh can only wing it for so long. He’s run out of friends and comedians who have more than a passing interest in hip hop, and I presume there can’t be that many more obscure uk rappers to feature. All in all a shame - nice idea, but I think romesh realises there isn’t much life left in this.
