Queering the American Dream with Angela Yarber

Description
The American Dream, which suggests that anyone can achieve success in this country, is a concept desperately in need of radical revision: It blatantly ignores the realities of Indigenous genocide, institutionalized racism, sexism, ableism, and heteronormativity; assumes that “success” within a capitalist framework is the ultimate goal; that hard work in favor of material gains should take precedence over everything, including our relationships and our well-being; and that human dominance over all living species, on the way to this success, is natural and even favorable. None of this is a dream that I wish for myself or for my loved ones! But what dreams do we want to cultivate instead? What American dreams guide us toward healing – ourselves and the earth; towards restorative justice; towards radical inclusion that really does make life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness available to everyone? On the latest episode of the Home to Her podcast, Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber offers us a beautiful revisioning of what a healthier, more inclusive American Dream looks like for her and her family. Angela is the Founder and Executive Director of the Tehom Center, a non-profit eco-retreat center that empowers marginalized women by teaching about revolutionary women through art, writing, retreats, and courses. She is also the author of the new book, Queering the American Dream, a memoir about her queer family’s 18-month trek across the country in their camper named Freya, while being guided by the wisdom of 16 revolutionary women from history and mythology. On today’s episode we discuss: • Angela’s evolving religious journey away from the Christian faith in which she is ordained; • What queering the American dream looks like for her and her family; • The lessons offered to her by the “subversive sister saints” who guided her journey; • Why it’s so important that followers of feminist spirituality be committed to liberation for all; • and how power saws can teach us valuable lessons about women’s empowerment work.
