Sula

Description
During May we read Sula by Toni Morrison. A dark tale of two friends who become strangers. We open up the discussion talking about our country’s current state and how much hasn't changed about the care of our black service members. We discuss our family migrating and moving to different states to create better lives for those to come and then we get into the drama. We meet Sula and Nell, which made us reminisce about the freedoms we had in our childhood, being a “ride or die”, and in what situations we would get our parents involved. We share our thoughts on the relationship dynamics between the parents and the children in this story. Then we get to the point that broke us all into pieces, the ultimate betrayal that tore Sula and Nell apart and caused their lives to dissolve. Toni had us captivated by her words, reading and rereading parts, dissecting, and analyzing to understand. This book took us through it, but we enjoyed the journey. Toni Morrison has always been captivating with her words, forcing us to look inward and look deeper than the black ink on paper. We thoroughly enjoyed this read. Join us next month, as we read Black Girls Must Die Exhausted by Jayne Allen. Special shoutout to our sponsor Black and Bookish.
