“Melvyn Bragg should probably be considered for beatification. His programme has done more than any other I know in recent years to promote public understanding and knowledge. The huge range of topics, the supportive notes and the consistent expertise and enthusiasm of the contributors, briskly chaired, is exactly what Reith had in mind for the BBC a hundred years ago. I was particularly tickled to see an 11 year old pupil quoting from one podcast when writing about the history of China. Not many programmes penetrate that far - St Bragg it is for me!”
