One afternoon he told me: I’m going to Home Depot, and I will be back in 30 minutes. 5 HOURS LATER! He finally returned. Why? Because he didn’t have the ENGLISH skills to get the bricks at Home Depot. How is this still possible! He has lived in the US for 20 years! There are millions of people just like him even though There are ample resources out there to learn English, as a matter of fact The English Learning market in the U.S. is estimated at US$2.8 Billion. (Global industry analysts inc.) but STILL of approximately the 20 million Latin immigrants who live in the USA ONLY 36% claim to be proficient. Why? After being an ESL teacher for the last 10 years I can tell you! The material is all the same, it is all aimed at upper middle-class learners who are already educated and whose focus is leisure. English for hotel customers, but what about the workers who carry the bags and clean the rooms? English for shopping but what about English for construction workers and landscapers to buy material at Home Depot?  IT DOES NOT EXIST and I’m going to fix that, one situation at a time. When they come to my store, they will find a series of simple/ affordable documents with the English they need to guide them through real life situations. single PDFs for your DMV appointment, for your immigration appointment, getting stopped by the police. These docs will provide the little wins they need in life, if you have ever studied a second language you know those little wins’ moments when we feel understood and equal are the ones that moves us forward in our learning journey. That is exactly why last September I created some lessons I thought would help them achieve these little wins. It is a basic pdf that I sell via email. I’m happy to report I have made X$ selling them and plenty of positive feedback. Now imagine what would happen if by winning this prize I could automate my process and develop ALL my curriculum ideas.  They would be able to accumulate tons of little wins and that would motivate them to not spend their entire lives living in the margins, they would live up to their full potential as citizens, as parents, and as employees. The entire US economy would benefit!  Because maybe we don’t think of them as often, but they are the very people who make our world go round, they take care of our children, grow our food, build our homes, wash our cars, cook our meals and it is my biggest dream to do something for them.
