Listen now
Description
What a wonderful chat I had with leading interior designer Kelly Donougher of 13 Interiors about Scope of Work. So much valuable info for clients in this episode! Kelly describes a Scope of Work as “the most crucial tool a designer will bring to you as a client”. It’s the body of work you’re going to be doing, the processes and tasks that a designer is going to deliver, the outcomes and deliverables of the project. And most of all, it’s a communication tool with you. Kelly discusses Scope of Work with a client  early on - to make sure there’s alignment between the client’s objectives and budget and her services, fees, benchmark expenditure and timing.  A designer will need pretty specific information from you when you make that first phone call - so don’t hold back!Fixed fees or hourly rates? Kelly charges fixed fees for phase 1 design and documentation work; hourly rate for phase 2 project management and installationHow is the figure of the fixed fee arrived at? Kelly reviews previous projects to determine how many hours were spent on different elements. Hourly rate is calculated on knowledge and expertise, the designers who are working on the process, and timeHow many revisions are included in the Scope of Work? Kelly offers 2 for the first phase design workWhat is “Scope creep”? When clients want to add something in at the last minute!Scope creep is usually positive and shows the client trusts us. However it does need to be recognised as additional work and charged for. Delivering additional scope depends on what other work and other clients we have booked inKelly and Jane talk what $ interior designers might charge for certain types of work - indicators only. Without knowing your home, the Scope of Work, expertise and experience required, complexity of project and materials and the market operating in, they are indicative ranges onlyKelly’s final piece of advice for clients is “Do it once and do it properly”.
