“As the husband of a breast cancer survivor, I found Dr. Teplinsky’s interview with the Marshalls very insightful, authentic, and ‘spot on’. It provided insights into what the Marshalls were both going through, what they shared with one another, and what they held back from saying until they published their book. Of particular interest was how Dr. Marshall grew as a physician as a result of being his wife’s caregiver. What struck me was what he said about some doctors not wanting to address him at visits because he was not the patient and only speaking directly to his wife. Caregivers play a critical role at doctor appointments … by taking notes, listening actively and asking questions; they are another set of ears for the patient who oftentimes don’t ‘hear’ everything. Plus, they can gain insight into how to provide better home care and support to their loved ones which is all an essential part of helping the patient.
