What happened?
This was one of my favorite shows, I looked forward to it every week for years. It always got me dancing and laughing out loud. Ever since the covid lockdown last year, it’s as though it became a completely different show. It doesn’t have music anymore. There are so few jokes, very little joy. It’s become indistinguishable from most other npr shows in that it’s now a very serious show about deep topics and I’m essentially just spending another hour listening to people talk about how worried they are, how messed up the world is, and how powerless i and everyone who cares are to fix anything. I’m sure everyone loves the new serious version of this show, but I have lifelong untreatable depression that has been getting worse over the past few years of utter chaos, and now every time I listen to this show (and a lot of news) I begin having suicidal thoughts or sink into the “hide in bed all day refusing to eat” version of my own depression. For that reason, I need to move on. I feel so bad deleting the episodes when they appear in my feed, but I feel worse listening. It’s nothing personal, I’m a freak who needs to forcefully disengage from tech and refuses to hook up a TV service because I find sitting around staring at screens maddening, so I’m not a listener this show cares about. Hopefully I can check back in a year or so and find the uplifting inspirational show is back.
