Jumped the shark
The five star rating is because I love/d this show and have been an avid fan since the beginning. But I was extremely disappointed and upset by this Thursday’s show and I fear you all have jumped the shark. Jennifer welsh’s “had it” with the Amish was straight and direct bigotry. In fact, if she knew anything about who she has had it with she’d know that she was describing Mennonites - not the “Amish”. Mennonites dress like the Amish and also specialize in farming and hand working but use technology. Oklahoma is home to a large Mennonite community. They fly on planes and use cars and tractors. While there are quite a few aspects Of Amish culture I personally could not subscribe to, the good news is they’re not asking me or anyone else to become Amish. They are a private community who immigrated to the United states hundreds of years ago to escape religious persecution and have been living and contributing to the USA for centuries. But in fact, this is beside the point. Normally the show makes a point to “have it” with specific human behaviors. In this case “to have had it with the Amish” - an entire group of people - is absolute bigotry. What makes it worse and more appalling is that much of the “I’ve had it” was based on conjecture and rumours. As a member of a religious minority myself I can recognize this as extremely dangerous no matter how funny you may think it is. Labelling an entire group as problematic and then spreading rumors that “you’ve heard” about them is the start of quite a few historical violent catastrophes. This episode dabbled in bigotry and hatred under the guise of liberalism. True liberals (as I am one) allow space for everyone (as long as they’re not hurting others). And as you correctly noted - the Amish keep to themselves, are not trying to change our culture or government, and therefore your only reason for disliking an entire group of people is that based on your limited information about them they appear to be different than you. I am hoping you recognize this and correct it because I love this show and want to continue listening. It’s normally funny and light and I really don’t want to have to stop.
