“Thank you for having Johnny Kim on your broadcast. I listened to the whole 4+ hours interview and was mesmerized. I too am an immigrant and a Korean-American. I am older than Johnny (57 yoa) but I relate to much of his same struggles as an immigrant, poor and with less than idea family life. I really had to take care of myself and learn how to navigate in America on my own.
I have never served in the military. It was my dream to be a Marine. My dad was a war-hero in the South Korean army. But he was a POW also and would not let me, his oldest so, enlist.
After college I became a cop. In 1990 it seemed more interesting to be a cop rather than a peace time military. I spent most of my 28 years as a gang suppression detective and a narcotics detective. I got to work these special assignments when gang and narcotics crimes were at their zenith. There was incredible, brazen violence and bad guy death every day. I loved every minute of it. Listening to you guys showed me that I can admit I loved the action that comes in a violent and dangerous environment.
No, I’m not trying to say my experiences are equal in scope and magnitude with your or others in the military. I’m just saying that I can relate to what you guys talk about. And I can enjoy, if only by myself.
I’m now semi-retired. Working with a bunch of other semi-retired cops, enjoying a double pension and happy families.
Thank you for your show. Gives an old cop a reason to think he’s not so crazy after all. Also, thank you Johnny Kim. Because you weren’t born in the USA, some might think of you as a hyphenated American (“Korean-American), but you exemplary life and sacrifice gives you the right to be just known as a true American. Proud of you bro.”
