What is Journalism Education?
Listen now
Description
What exactly is journalism education, and how should those who teach it respond to unprecedented changes in the media? And why does it seem that the more that “traditional” media jobs disappear, the more popular journalism degree programs are becoming. This paper aims to provide an overview of recent developments in journalism education, and to examine how journalism is regarded within the ranks of the academy, where it’s place is, to quote American academic Barbie Zelizer ‘often rife with various and sundry complications’. Lawrie’s paper will also discuss some of the strategies being developed our own program, as well as in journalism schools in the US. This will also be an opportunity to show our new program online publication ‘Upstart’ which plans to provide publishing opportunities for our students, and to serve as a site that focuses on the careers of emerging journalists in Australia.
