“While I am very excited that Ingrid and Cat are using their powerful platforms to discuss such important issues, I find that their discussions of feminism are very limited to gender discrimination. I was surprised and admittedly upset that there was no real discussion of how race, age, class, ability. etc. plays into objectification, rape culture, and slut shaming. As a white-passing person of color, I have always identified with Ingrid and while I understand that the youtube community is (as is society at this time) majority white, I think it is important (all the more important, even) that we not white-wash issues, especially when feminism is so controversial because of its history of being exclusive to white, able, upper-class educated women (while the quote from Coretta Scott King is certainly powerful and perhaps useful to discuss in terms of sexual oppression, it is important not to co-opt others’ experiences of social injustice. Intersectional feminism would certainly discuss racial discrimination as well, so I am not even sure that this quote needs to be reconfigured for gender. Indeed, I suggest that the two produce a podcast to discuss intersectional feminism as this would be a great learning experience for all). Further, gender was discussed here in terms of “both genders.” I question this wording. Perhaps they did not mean to present gender in this way, but if so, I must ask if they really believe there are only two genders…As Ingrid acknowledged, there is no such thing as a perfect feminist/advocate. I really appreciated this acknowledgement and I hope my critiques are taken constructively.”
