Fun
John may have a leg up on other writers in terms of his credibility to a potential publisher and his ability to get a manuscript read and therefore get his foot in the door. I know other writers who have not had it so easy as John seems to have had to sell his book. His discussion of feeling as an imposter comes off as a little disingenuous because we assume his screenwriting credits opened doors unavailable to others. But, it’s also possible his book is really that good. I guess we’ll find out. Nonetheless, this is a neat story about publishing. I actually know some authors who have had books optioned to movies, too, and it’s fascinating to hear the conversations between author and agent and all the others that John lets us listen to. In one of my friend’s case, the Oscar-winning movie based on his first book was the best advertising he could have had. It’s fascinating to hear about how that decision gets made by the author. It’ll be fun to see how it all works out.

An entertaining podcast as long as you keep in mind that this is how an extremely privileged white male writes and sells his first book.

He didn’t just become a screenwriter, he took everyone along with him thanks to Scriptnotes. Now he doesn’t just become a novelist he takes us along with him. Showing the way. Thanks John August
