“On paper, our offense is slightly above average across the MLB (12th in runs). However, a closer look at some individual stats reveals that our batters are far from average-not that they are all performing well, but their stat lines make them appear highly specialized. Machado leads the team RBIs by a mile, but his OPS is a pedestrian 0.734. Cronenworth rarely notches an RBI (11 on the season) but leads the team in batting average (0.306) and runs (26). Hosmer has a great batting average (0.305) but doesn’t have many runs to show for it (12). Grisham is our only Swiss army knife who is decent in all situations, everyone else is either machete, bottle opener, or scissors.
Is it normal for batters to be this “specialized”? Is our lineup capitalizing on the weirdness of our batters?”
