Charming and Highly Relevant
These guys are knocking it out of the park. Potula and co. bring effortless wit and charisma to material that could have been tacky in less capable hands. The podcast is delightfully bite-sized, a really tight format, but its well-drawn characters have already stuck themselves firmly in my head - even at just 6 episodes! “Masala Jones” is ‘woke,’ too, though in a refreshingly organic way. The listener roots for Samar and his ragtag collection of porn buddies primarily because of the killer comedy writing, but also because the writers have used the quirky premise to tackle some very serious and pertinent issues about race, sexual liberation, toxic masculinity, and more. The team certainly know what they are talking about, but “Masala Jones” is definitely not a lecture. Rather, each socio-political teaching moment is merely the cherry on top of a well-constructed, zippy setpiece. Please check this one out ASAP! A lot of fun plot stuff clicks in to place at the end of Season One, so I’m sure they have some great ideas cooking.
