“Everything she said, 100% true. So brave of her to speak out, and to create a conversation to change the dialogue that until has some very toxic undertones. I’d add, often the shidduch is a term that is weaponized. Example: warning teenagers they need to look a certain way or they won’t attract a man, adding to their already fragile self esteem and poor body image issues. As it is, puberty isn’t a fun experience for girls, no need to make it any more painful. Example: shunning family members, lying about mental illness in the family to maintain an image… for shiduchim. Example: if your not religious enough, or your skirt is too short. Or you don’t go to shul enough, or you have the “wrong” friends, etc… people will notice, and it will ruin your options for shidduchim. It’s especially harmful to have these conversations with teenagers. Just let the kids be kids!!! I could go on….”
