By the first century, the name of the Festival of Hanukkah gave way to another name, the Festival of Lights. It is interesting to note that the main symbol for Hanukkah is the 9 branched Hanukkiah. It is most likely that the lights of the Hanukkiah gave rise to the new name, the Festival of Lights.
