Cover versions of popular songs are often lazy and uninspired. After all, songwriting is hard, so it’s tempting to take shortcuts…why bother writing your own music and lyrics when you could just “reinterpret” someone else’s work?   But there are a few talented artists who have managed to take an existing song and elevate it to a new level, eclipsing the original and truly making it their own.
