Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! today is January 11, 2024, and what are we going to review Together Forever (1987) Link: https://youtu.be/do1tUMzUwTQ?si=C0zynZWsY67rB46i Running time: 29 minutes Rating: not rated Genre: religious drama A brief summary Summary: This is a presentation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints missionaries use to teach people about families being together forever. Several families who have experienced tragedy are chronicled as well as wayward souls who are brought back to the fold. The end of the film testifies that families can indeed be together forever Together Forever, was directed by Michael McClean who also contributed several landmark songs to the film such as the eponymous “Together Forever” as well as “Stay with Me,” and “Be that Friend.” It is a series of four different vignettes of couples or individuals who discuss how they found meaning in life through their discovery of Mormonism, oops, I meant to say the plan of salvation. Although this short film is available on videocassette, the church also broadcast Together Forever on network television. In the beginning of 1989 this film aired in every U.S. city with an LDS mission headquarters. The film won the Catholic-sponsored Gabriel Award and received an 8 out of 10 on a Neilsen TV survey. Together forever repeatedly emphasizes the importance of making time for families, it doesn’t deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that, again? This and other similar church videos of this era could be ordered for free through a phone number provided in church purchased TV commercials, viewers could elect to have this and other LDS tapes delivered personally by missionaries instead of through the mail by a postman These VHS tape orders became known to missionaries as Media referrals. As a full time missionary in the 1990s, I remember getting calls a couple of times a week to hand deliver this specific VHS tape to investigators and deliver a message. They really made missionary work a lot easier. The most ironic thing about media referrals like together forever, is that the message we gave had little to do with the video! Instead, regardless of what video they requested, we would give the standard missionary first discussion which covered God, Jesus, and never forget, Joseph Smith Lemme turn up the volume, I think I’m gonna cry…or throw up…. video emphasizes that it is important to make time for families, it doesn’t deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that?
