Episode Summary: In today’s episode, we discuss the recent changes to the student visa program. As part of the new measures being introduced to the Australian Migration System one of the changes recommended was to bring in reforms that would directly impact International Students and Temporary Graduate Visa holders. For all applications lodged on and after the 23 March 2024, the government is now raising the English language requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas. The conversation begins with the recent changes for the English Laguage Test scores for student visa and temporary graduate visa holders. Amitava details out the minimum test scores now for both IELTS and PTE for subclass 500 and subclass 485. Hong Kong passport holders and British National Overseas (BNO), are not required to meet this increased language requirement. The test validity window for all Temporary Graduate visa applications decreases from three years to one year. Applicants must provide evidence that they have completed an English Language test no more than one year immediately before the date of the visa application. Students who will be studying English through ELICOS, there will be no change. Partners and dependents of primary student visa applicants do not have to meet these changes. Amitava details out other changes that the government is bringing in - Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement. ​From 23 March 2024, the Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaces the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for Student visas. Student visa applicants no longer need to satisfy the GTE requirement that they genuinely intend to only stay in Australia temporarily. The GS requirement focuses on the assessment of the student’s genuine intention to study in Australia.
