Part Two - Conversations with barrister Nicholas Wilkinson
Listen now
Description
In this episode narcissism expert Dr Supriya McKenna and top family lawyer Karin Walker speak with acclaimed barrister Nicholas Wilkinson, from One Hare Court Chambers. Nick has a deep understanding of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and has been involved in many high conflict cases. He even successfully represented Princess Haya of Jordan in her recent high profile divorce from the Ruler of Dubai. They discuss how common it is, in Nick's experience, for solicitors to be unaware that narcissism is at play in their cases. They also talk about how difficult it is to spot a covert (closet) narcissist in court proceedings and why it is so dangerous to miss this type. Supriya and Karin give their tips for lawyers on how to recognise the covert narcissist, including the giveaways in correspondence between solicitors. They discuss how the true narcissist has an overriding sense of entitlement in the divorce, which they cannot be talked out of and which doesn't subside at all over time. Nick makes the point that it is particularly hard to spot covert narcissists on the 'other side' because what might look like a sense of entitlement could actually be an aggressive stance taken by their lawyers, rather than by the client themselves.
