This week on our Karr on Culture podcast: A followup on the World Cup's lousy officiating — and what could be done about it (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/files/2010/05/karronculture-badge.gif)A few of you wrote in after our World Cup setup podcast (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/culture/audio-the-world-what/1542/) asking why soccer doesn't allow instant replay — especially after officials denied apparent goals scored by the USA (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/worldcup2010/2010/06/18/2010-06-18_us_stages_furious_rally_to_earn_22_draw.html) and England (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/england/7857382/England-v-Germany-Frank-Lampards-disallowed-goal-highlights-stupidity-of-Fifas-ruling.html). This week, we have an answer: Sports economist Stefan Szymanski (http://www.cass.city.ac.uk/faculty/s.szymanski/Stefan_Szymanski.html) of London's Cass Business School says video reviews would slow down the game. He has some alternative suggestions to improve officiating. And change may be coming: soccer's international organizing body (http://www.fifa.com/) will be experimenting with additional officials at some European games starting in a few weeks.
