What great interviews
Carla Nappi is a wonderful interviewer. She obviously reads the books beforehand and has a clear understanding of the book before the interview, even though they cover a diverse range of topics. I like how she gives a summary at the beginning and as one interviewee said, she described the book better than he could. Sometimes I would want to go buy the book after hearing the interview. At other times I don’t feel I need to, as I have already heard a satisfying amount on something I didnt previously have a specific in. She knows when to jump in and when to let the interviewee talk, in some cases the interviewee’s personal story is as interesting as the book being discussed. Her interview with David Tod Roy is a case in point. I will make one small request though. Not all listeners are scholars and not all are fluent mandarin speakers. There is sometimes assumed knowledge when terms are mentioned and it would be helpful to explain some terms a little bit more. This would no doubt make this series even more satisfying for the amateur sinologists, who just want to find out a bit more about Chinese history/art/literature our there!
