“Hey Tom,
I have a small dog (pomeranian x poodle, now neutered, 15 months) who is around level 3 obedience with his e-collar, a strong level 2 with no tools, he has a reliable recall, place, etc. Last year, we tried to introduce a second dog from a breeder, the dog was a 2 year old male, intact (and at the time my dog was intact), we now know we didn’t do a proper introduction as we just walked in and put this dog in our living room and they started fighting right away, it started over toys, then us, then the couch, and kept escalating, we tried desperately to make it work (place, crate and rotate, muzzle trained, etc) but ultimately we had a crate and rotate slip up one day, our small dog got bit and so did I, we ended up rehoming the dog back to the breeder.
We’ve been working super hard since to make sure our dog is neutral and well adapted to other dogs, we’ve been doing structured greetings and play with only known dogs and shown him he can trust us to advocate for him, and he’s no longer showing fear or reactivity towards other dogs, and is a lot more confident overall (he was apprehensive after he was bit). He’s also now neutered (not sure if him maturing was an issue at the time).
We really want to add a second dog again and plan to begin with parallel walking, greetings through an xpen, keeping food and toys away at first, but we’re really worried our dog is going to lose it with another dog coming into his space. Is it likely he will accept a dog in our home again even after such a bad situation before? How long would you wait to do a face to face intro with no barriers after getting a new dog?”
