24. Red Shades Without Carmine
Listen now
Description
Carmine is a widely used pigment for cosmetics, very popular for its natural origin, unique bluish-pink shade, and heat stability. But this pigment derives from carminic acid, extracted from insects, and is facing a ban from consumers and brands looking for vegan ingredients. This episode describes the use of carmine, how it is labeled, and the challenges facing formulators who want to develop carmine-free formulas. We also present what options Kobo offers to replace this raw material.  FDA regulations on Carmine: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/cfrsearch.cfm?fr=73.100   PETA information regarding Carmine: https://www.peta.org/living/personal-care-fashion/carmine-makeup/  Soft Lips Natural Lipstick without Carmine: https://koboproductsinc.com/formulations/KLP-302-EU.pdf  Kobo’s micas: https://koboproductsinc.com/apps/PearlSelector.aspx  About Kobo: ABOUT US:  Since 1987 Kobo has provided innovative, technology-based raw materials to the cosmetic industry.
