“I found this last pod cast almost unlistenable. Firstly Dan ought to have provided a brief explanation of the “ meme”,which resulted in the peace activist being “ cancelled”!
The notion of cancel culture is riddled with contradictions & anomalies. Firstly many who claim to be cancelled, (& I am referring to celebs, etc) seem to benefit from this, in terms of growing a larger fan base etc. Obviously there are exceptions, perhaps Ye is one, & deservedly so! This individual is clearly unwell, & is causing his own “ economic self harm”, pass me a tissue!!
I live in Aotearoa/NZ, where many of us see the USA as a total hot bed of disunity, a total series of insurmountable contradictions, coupled with virtue signalling by predominately middle class, people who have little to no understanding of the lives led by the working poor. Slavery has not left the USA it has just evolved into a more palatable form, I.e, low wages, poor housing, shabby & agenda filled education. A public school system that is crumbling, ditto, the health system etc. Sadly you have a political system that is not separated from the religious right!
Many countries in the Western world have ditched the two party electoral system, as it is not represent Ive, nor fit for purpose.
You could claim Alex Jones has been cancelled, this is not accurate, & sadly his viewing numbers are again climbing!
You have class issues largely ignored, and an entire section of your population deemed dispenseable.
Cuba has better stats than the USA for literacy & numeracy, infant mortality rates, mortality rates, people attending University irrespective of background, completion rates of high schools, far less incarceration rates, ( I guess that one’s easy as the USA has the highest incarceration rates on the planet. In part thanks to Bill Clinton!
So I feel, in conclusion “ Cancel Culutre “ is very subjective, I.e, the “Oath Keepers”, may not be visible to you, that does not mean they have been “cancelled”, they just use other platforms.
I do however share some concern re the lack of open debate at/on Universities, that said, if you ensure thaat only the middle class can afford to attend these institutions is that not inevitable!
It also strikes me as odd that this is perceived as a liberal fixation, & yet your current political landscape would suggest otherwise!
Perhaps the best illustration of this that springs to my mind is the victory in the mid-terms in Florida by De Santos” Florida is the place woke comes to die”! This is a man who supported the overturning of Roe Vs Wade.
I find the emerging religious right far more concerning than the red herring issue of “ Cancel Culture”.
Our planet is burning, surely this is far more important than some fool crying over being kicked off Twitter!
Personally, I am an educated, working class woman working in Community Law!
It will not surprise me in the least if the USA winds up in a civil war, in the next 30/40 years.
