Album Review: The Rolling Stones’ “Hackney Diamonds” The Rolling Stones have been a constant in the ever-evolving world of rock music. There’s a comforting familiarity in knowing that they’re still out there, producing music, releasing albums, and touring. I recall the chatter in 1974 when they dropped “It’s Only Rock and Roll”. Critics claimed they were past their prime. Yet, here we are, decades later, and the Stones are still rolling, defying all odds. Their journey has been a roller coaster. While many have prematurely declared the end of their era multiple times, the Stones have always bounced back, proving their critics wrong. Their resilience and ability to adapt are truly commendable. Now, let’s talk about “Hackney Diamonds”. From the get-go, the album exudes an energy reminiscent of latter-day AC/DC. The opening track, “Angry”, immediately brought to mind the iconic guitar sounds of AC/DC. The Stones seem to have gravitated towards that rock and roll vibe, and it works wonders for them. Tracks like “Get Close” and “Depending on You” showcase their signature rock sound, blended with catchy pop sensibilities. “Dreamy Skies” and “Messy Up” give a nod to their disco influences, reminiscent of their hit “Miss You”. The nearly 8-minute epic, “Sweet Sounds of Heaven”, featuring Lady Gaga, is a standout. Its crescendo is mesmerizing, and it’s one of those tracks you’ll find yourself playing on repeat. One of the most impressive aspects of this album is Mick Jagger’s vocals. At 80, he’s still belting out tunes with the same vigor and passion, proving age is just a number. His upcoming tour plans are a testament to his undying spirit and love for music. In conclusion, “Hackney Diamonds” is a gem in the vast discography of the Rolling Stones. It’s one of those rare albums that captivates you from start to finish. For me, it’s a reminder of why I fell in love with music in the first place. The Stones have once again delivered an album that resonates with both old fans and new. If you haven’t given it a listen yet, I highly recommend you do.
