“On your recommendation I watched City of God & I’m glad I did. Being true Renaisance men who think about the Roman Empire several times a day you were probably able to enjoy the movie in the original Portuguese, but I had to rely on subtitles. It did not at all detract from my enjoyment of this compelling film, which is at least the equal of any American gangster movie. I’ve read a bit about American bank robbers from the 1920’s & 30’s & the scenes of the unpaved streets, scraggly dogs & other animals and packs of kids running wild really reminded me of West Dallas & Cement City, Texas, where Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow were raised. The desire of the kid gangsters for fame & notoriety resulting from getting their pictures in the paper brandishing their guns was right out of Bonnie & Clyde, as were the references to the Browning Automatic Rifle, which was Clyde’s weapon of choice. This demonstrates that a poverty stricken & pathological upbringing transcends time, race and location. Thanks for the recommendation. Notre Dame men can talk about lots of things other than football, altho the pigskin is always primary. By the way, I was really rooting for that chicken & hope she avoided the stew pot.”
