I Remember My Neighbored
Nickname Joe Louis was given to me at the edge 7 years by my first grade teacher Annie Tafolla at Crockett elementary I don’t know why. My real name is Luiz, just Luiz. I Remember, el Barrio, Buena Vista and near Colorado St. just as cars went up the bridge that went over the Railroads where later Jailhouse Cafe was opened known for their Chicken Fried Steak. My friend Rolando my neighbor and I often skipped school to walk over that bridge to visit his Mom that sold flowers to the tourist. She was set up on the sidewalk between “El Mercado” and “Mi Tierra Cafe” Back then, el Mercado was wide open warehouse and local farmers drove their trucks loaded with vegetables , fruits (crops) to sell. All trucks would back-in so locals with walk and circle to see available products to buy. My grandma’s favorite place to buy fresh veggies, everything else, Centeno’s Grocery Market on Comerce St. Our first favorite stop, his Mom after giving him “un estirón de orejas” for skipping school with us a few coins to run over aAllss the opposite side of El Mercado where a kind humble elderly man sold the best “Raspa” (shaved ice) and topped it with the best Homemade Vanilla Ice cream I have ever tested with hearts full of joy we walked our way to the Texas Theatre, or the Aztec Theatre and find a way to slip in and see a western movie. On the weekends, Roy’s Ice House on the opposite side at the end of the bridge on Commerce St, live music, (conjunto) with play music outdoors, and adults would the night away, cars parked circled the Ice House so much fun. So much to talk about, so much to remember. My Grandma who raised all 8 kids, use to say, “Recordar Es Vivir”. Now that I am 65 yrs old, know what it means.

I’m so glad I found this podcast and I’m grateful there is a strong voice for Latinos. He is a leader and strong representative of our Mexican American community. Not only our community but the American experience.
