Queering 100 Years of Disney featuring ‘The Little Mermaid’
Listen now
Description
Disney is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and its latest live action adaptation of one of its most popular animated films ‘The Little Mermaid’ has just hit cinemas so we took this opportunity to explore our relationship and experiences from a queer perspective to their extensive catalogue of films and television. We brought in experts Dr Lauren Rosewarne, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, academic, writer, commentator and broadcaster on sex, gender, pop culture, media, politics and feminism, plus ‘Deconstructing Disney’ author Eleanor Byrne, to discuss their thoughts on Disney’s impact on pop culture and its relationship to the LGBTIQ+ community. We also reviewed the latest version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ and discussed the perfect casting of Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy in the lead roles and why these films still resonate with audiences after many years and many adaptations.
