I never knew the story, however I found the journalists’ constant questioning of whether Mr. Proctor had gained any insight into himself; he is obviously a man who had to deny his own inner feelings since he was a young man and not to be introspective, and you expect him after trauma, which causes further shutdown of the self, to miraculously gain introspection. Perhaps the only reason he clings to Enoch’s politics is not because he truly believes in it but because he placed his identity in Enoch’s shadow to hide.
