Kieran Creaven's Sentence Reduced And May Be Back In Ireland In Weeks
Listen now
Description
A report today in The Independent has revealed that former RTE employee Kieran Creaven could be back on Irish streets in a matter of weeks. He was originally sentenced to 18 months after a paedophile hunter group confronted him when he thought he was meeting a 13 year old girl. He will now only serve half that sentence. One of the mitigating factors for the short sentence, according to Judge Phillips, was that there was no real victim in the case and Creaven gave an early guilty plea. A number of people have expressed their outrage at this online, claiming that we shouldn’t wait until a child is abused before taking these paedophiles off our streets and imposing long term sentences. Others have argued that his exact whereabouts and address when he does return, should be made public, so as others can be aware and protect their own children. But, does he deserve a shorter sentence, because there was no actual victim in this case according to the judge? And, does that mean that a child has to become a victim and be abused, before the courts can impose longer sentences? Is that right or fair?  Should there be mandatory sentences for anyone caught up in any way with child abuse or child pornography and should their addresses made available to the public?
