A Dutch man has had his request to change his age rejected by a Dutch court today. Emile Ratelband who is 69 yrs old made headlines last week after claiming he felt 20 yrs younger and wanted to amend his age to his preferred age of 49. He is well known in the Netherlands as a motivational speaker and said his request is on par with other requests such as changing your gender ,“I say it’s comparable because it has to do with my feeling, with respect about who I think I am, my identity,” he said. Although the court rejected his request and many people see it as attention seeking, some have said it is no different than someone identifying as an opposite gender. One of the comments online said, “Brings up valid comparisons between his case and gender reassignment, does it not! If you think him wanting to change his age is absurd, it’s hard to argue that being transgender is somehow different!”. Does this man have a valid point, if you can change your gender legally, should you be able to change your age? Or maybe you think this court action is offensive towards the transgender community who have battled with their gender identity for years?
