A listener alerted us to the story of drunk driver Dermot Dowd who was jailed for 5 yrs for causing the deaths of his two passengers after admitting to drunk driving in Donegal in 2016. The inquest of his two female passengers was today. Eoin said, "This may be the harsh truth and I’m glad to see this man was suitably punished but what I don’t get is why these women are being portrayed as innocentvictims. Apparently they were drinking all day with this man and made a decision to get into his car knowing he was drunk. These deaths are just as much their own fault as this man’s. I firmly believe if someone is stopped for drink driving and arrested, the passengers should be too. If you knowingly get into a car being driven by a drink driver you are just as guilty as the driver in my opinion. You’re encouraging the driver to take that risk by not stopping them yourself." Should a passenger being driven by a drunk driver be arrested also for being complicit in the crime? Are they just as bad as the drunk driver themselves? Is it insensitive to blame a passenger for their own death caused by them being a passenger in a car driven by a drunk driver?
