Description
A judge in Ennis yesterday jailed a man for telling a member of the Gardai that he would have a “widows curse” put on her after he was stopped for a traffic offence last year. Martin Joyce who is 28 was jailed for 8 months after issuing a torrent of verbal abuse on the Guard before saying, “I am putting a curse on you. I will light a candle that your family will die and you will suffer grief in the next 12 months. When it happens, I will take pictures and send them to you and put them up for everyone to see. I will get my mother to give you the widow’s curse and they will be dying belonged to you.” In court Joyce said through his solicitor that he wished to apologise and said he was going through a tough period at that time due to a drug habit. It was noted Joyce does also have a list of prior driving convictions but was jailed for 5 months for obstruction to a Guard and 3 months for driving without insurance. Should someone be actually jailed for threatening a Guard with a curse? Should some Guard’s have tougher skin considering the line of work that they're in?
