Marginalizing in the name of Love
I was so sad to hear Shawn’s comments on Lonnie Frisbee. Lonnie was a gay man, a powerful church leader, and instrumental in moves of the Holy Spirit. To say that Lonnie struggled with homosexual thoughts because he was molested as a nine year old is a classic dismissal of the very complex process of sexual development. It’s marginalizing and hurtful to strip away someone’s dignity and identity in such a convenient, theologically sanitized single statement. Shawn was certainly right that Lonnie was broken, but not because of his choices. Lonnie was broken because of the shame and guilt heaped on him by church leadership. Imagine if someone said to you, “the sacred, loving relationship you have with your husband or wife is an illegitimate perversion and and your perspective on love and self are a cancer to our society”, how you would feel? And this isn’t coming from a television sound bite, this is coming from a beloved leader of a live giving community you belong to and deeply love. How could he not be broken? How can the millions of gay Americans not be shattered by the church’s abandonment and condemnation?
