“As the team bus sped westbound along the M62 I knew what all the players were thinking, and it wasn’t about what pre-match drills I had in store for our Monday night match at Saxingham Athletic. If the driver allowed the speedometer to dip just a millimeter below 56mph the bomb would detonate, blowing the whole squad, management and our promotion chances to smithereens. Any traffic at all could spell certain death, and the notoriously congested junction at Welifax was imminent.
I have always wondered why so many people take this route to Welifax at this time on a Monday. There are several back lanes and a ring road that skirts around the business park, which despite being a mile longer actually gets you past the lights on Trellis Lane in a fraction of the time. Then again perhaps these periods offer some solace to weary commuters, allowing some much needed time and space to reflect on the trials and tribulations of their lives. Musings of marriages, promotions at work, ill-judged infidelities or a deep analysis of a recent bold formation switch to turn round a half-time deficit. All done from the solitude of a seductive leather seat with air conditioning and a shiny walnut trim. Well… if you drive a Jaguar X8 that is.
