“The coroner was a short man. Some would say embarrassingly short. Enough to give a man a complex. Not me. Height is arbitrary. A genetic fact. A man could no more control his height than a promising centre-back could control which scouts showed him interest. Some of the best footballers in the world were short men, and I respected them.
“He was murdered, obviously,” added the coroner with annoyance. I was growing to dislike him more and more.”
