A Hilarious Recap Show Riddled With White Supremacy and Performative Activism
I was a huge fan of both Willam and Alaska since their appearances on their respective seasons. I’ve listened, and loved, race chaser since episode one. That all changed last week when I happened upon mountains of instances of Willam being racist, classist, and transphobic. My heart was obliterated. As a POC, the images of Willam portraying two different characters in blackface in the film Blubberella (2011) were not only disturbing, but made me physically ill. I searched and searched for a genuine apology from Willam since this was almost a decade ago, but I stopped and realized Willam was a grown man, who willfully made those choices. Fans have brought these violent images up to both Willam and Alaska on social media, but they have chosen to ignore them. This is the definition of white privilege and are the same acts that perpetuate white supremacy. For them to both willfully ignore the pain they have caused and to continue on performatively touting their support for the BLM movement on their podcast (which has an all white cast) is a slap in the face to their fans. Sadly I have to move on from this and I hope other listeners do the same.
