“I have strong but mixed feelings about this show. I think the format is interesting and the wordplay on “radio rental” is witty and creative. I love love love listening to “the tapes” — I find the stories fascinating and thought-provoking and a twisty alternative to true crime narrative podcasts.
But this jackpot combination is soured by Terry Carnation. This was my first introduction to Terry Carnation, and I have not looked into him any further, so I don’t know if he’s the same on other shows. But his personality, lines, and acting style all sound stolen from Will Farrell as Ron Burgundy in Anchorman. The writing is ridiculously corny, immature, and uninteresting, especially in comparison to the “tapes” he’s playing. And I don’t understand the seemingly fake ads. I hate those just as much as I hate real ones.
I was really surprised to find most reviews actually enjoy this part of the show. As for me, I’ll keep skipping over the filler audio to just listen to the stories in each episode.”
