“I came across this majestic podcast quite by chance when catching Scott on the equally outstanding Glass Onion (John Lennon) podcast hosted by self-effacing, well-researched Antony Rotunno.
They made such a brilliant duo & that I had to check out Scott’s other podcasts and immediately settled into Rainbow Valley on afternoon walks in wet & wild Yorkshire.
And what a fabulous accompaniment they have made whilst listening through my headphones on bracing country walks.
The production values are second to none, detailed research is never-less-than- enlightening and, best of all, Scott’s softly spoken, calm yet authoritative voice makes for an exceptionally enjoyable listening experience.
In just one week I’ve learned more than I ever knew about the Profumo Scandal; Great Train Robbery; David Frost’s epic skewering of ‘Dr’ Emile Savundra; suave voiced Matt Monro; the tragically brief life of Tammi Terrell; Brian Epstein’s genius in keeping the greatest band in history fully focussed (underlining how quickly they lost the plot after his passing); the making of the trailblazing Sgt Peppers album & so much more.
Surpassing everything, though, was the yearly review of 1964 complete with so many quality musical inserts that it merely underlined what a special year it was for emerging talent.
It was so good that it has made me hold back on listening to the other yearly reviews (1960-63) so I can savour them for a later date.
Lockdown is proving a tremendously depriving hardship for so many of us after almost a year, in January 2021, but one of the positives has been the emergence of many high quality podcasts for the discerning.
I have come to cherish dozens but none more than the magnificent Rainbow Valley.
Thank you for what are clearly time-consuming efforts in the recording studio that maintain this gold standard.
And please keep them coming, Mr Phipps !”
