Very Helpful Introduction—more to come?
This is a very useful guide through Capital Vol. 1. This is true even if you already have access to a reading group or class. Harvey is very clear, sticks fairly close to the text throughout, and offers a really solid framework for thinking through material which can appear, at first, both very daunting and very obtuse. Harvey is fairly open in his interpretation, allowing the student or layperson a number of roads of thought to follow. This is invaluable for any subsequent engagements with those interpretations that are stricter, wilder, or more technical. Capital Vol. 1 is a rich work—Marx attempts an extraordinary range of critical enquiries and uses an equally extraordinary range of critical tools. Harvey does his best to indicate these—but, as he says from the beginning—you WILL HAVE TO READ THE BOOK at the same time. You will notice, in doing so, that there are a large number of issues and concerns that Harvey doesn't mention—that is the beauty of this podcast, it introduces Capital Vol. 1, it doesn't close it. The weakest part of the podcast is the failure to show how Capital Vol. 1 forms part of Marx's whole work—how it complements and contradicts earlier work by Marx, such as his and Engels' Manifesto of the Communist Party, German Ideology, and Marx's own 1844 Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts. Those interested might find Peter Osborne's How to Read Marx (London: Granta, 2005) a useful addition to this podcast and the book itself. Perhaps the most useful aspect of Harvey's seminar is that he reads Capital Vol. 1 in light of the subsequent, unfinished, volumes—2 and 3. Those who appreciate, enjoy, or find this podcast useful should follow the link to Harvey's website. DO put in a donation for future seminars on those volumes (that are, in many ways in much greater need of a guide than Vol. 1). Enjoy this work—it is a fantastic experience to work through Capital, one that many of us continue to treasure.

Good quality and decent job editing the material. Thank you to all involved in providing this remarkable "public" service. Quotes used due to unequal access to the material. Regardless, again...fantastic. Warning about Q and A periods. Audience not miked and no noticeable sweetening done. I...Read full review »
