According to WHO, About 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, and 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to diabetes each year. Factually, diabetes kills more than cancer as a result of low advocacy and societal perspective of diabetes. There are lots of myths that people feed themselves on diabetes. 1. Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar. The fact is, diabetes isn't only caused by sugar but also by some other factors such as too much cigarette consumption, alcohol, and genetics. 2. Diabetes only affects people with obesity. The fact is, diabetes doesn't only affect obese people but they are at high risk of it. 3. Another myth is type 2 diabetes is 'mild' diabetes. Fact: There are four types of diabetes, and they can all be managed if presented for treatment early. Yesterday, On Awujo Wa, it was a privilege to host Dr Nasiru SANNI, A Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. He's a Member of Diabetes Association of Nigeria, Also a Member of Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria. We discussed extensively Diabetes; Myths, Facts, and Prevention.
