REV On Air: The Effects of Textiles on Health and Planet with Michel May of AIZOME
Listen now
Description
Today we are very much looking forward to bringing you all a conversation with Michel May that about a subject that has become very near to us - that is the issue of chemicals and harmful dyes found in the vast majority of our textiles and in particular, bedding, which we are sleeping in every night. This extends of course across all textiles, but as our guest has launched a completely natural, plant based dyed bedding company, we want to focus a bit on that for today.  For some context, the global textile industry churns out millions of tons of products annually. 80% of those products are petrochemical-based, such as the non-biodegradable polyester fabrics. And the majority of commercially-used textile dye is made from oil, tar, heavy metals, and toxic chemicals. Conservatively, 60% of all dyes are AZO dyes – known carcinogens. Chlorobenzenes, common to both herbicides and dyes alike, are toxic when inhaled or when in direct contact with the skin. Not to mention that the chemical formaldehyde is a favorite for any fabric advertised as wrinkle-resistant sheets.  So what’s the good news here for our bodily and planetary health? That there are wonderful people coming up with wonderful, nature based solutions! So now on to my guest Michel of Aizome. Aizome craft luxuriously soft, healthy bedding, made entirely from plants. Using the magic of ultrasoundAIZOME has revived the lost art of plant dye for a modern, global market, infusing 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton with the pigment and properties of ancient medicinal herbs to create the naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic, skin-soothing sheets that are durable, colorfast, and free from all synthetics and toxins, from seed to sheet.
