“I enjoyed learning about Elizabeth Thompson and the Australian Prime Minister, but not sure the main thesis of the podcast holds up. For one, Gillard was Prime Minister only a few years ago, so you can’t really say that Australia never elected a woman again. It’s simply too soon to draw those kinds of comparisons between Gillard and Thompson. Same is true for Costa Rica, where Laura Chinchilla was president until 2014, and Brazil, where the first woman president is by some definitions still president (facing impeachment). Also I’m not sure that the case of Prime Minister Gillard is an example of moral licensing at all. After all, her detractors were her opponent; most of them never voted for her in the first place. It’s more a case of backlash, which is related but not really the same.”
