“The questions of morality, religion and medical science raised by euthanasia have been well thrashed over the past two decades — the debates ending in the same dilemmas that were their starting points. The only change has to be a political decision — to change the law, or not. The decision has been made in a few countries — we are still waiting in New Zealand. Across the Tasman, a law change towards assisted dying moved a step closer on Friday in Victoria after a marathon debate in the state parliament’s lower house. Even just a passing mention of this by Insight would have least given the programme some topicality. As would have attempts to answer questions like: will the new parliament have any more courage than the last one; will Seymour’s bill be carried over; is it more likely to pass in the new parliament? With a dozen press gallery reporters and two producers paid specifically to report on Parliament, RNZ should be able to offer more insight than was available in Sunday’s grab bag of human interest soundbites”
