“I came to Scene on Radio’s #SeeingWhite series via the Backstory podcast. I am white. I am from East Germany. I had never thought of being racist or having racial bias. Of course, I was very very wrong. Seeing white has changed my life. It is a very difficult struggle to recognize, acknowledge, and call out any systemic or individual racism I witness. A must listen for all white people in the United States. If you deny what you hear, listen to the series until you don’t deny it but feel a visceral, pit-of-your-stomach pain. Then listen again. And again. Only when white people feel that pain and that reluctance will we start working towards uncovering our part and our privilege in the systemic racism.”
